Summer

By on Tuesday, 25th January 2011

Summer’s heat and humidity can wreak havoc with your hair and skin, so your beauty regimen needs to change.

Cheryl Kramer Kaye, beauty editor of Redbook magazine, says that means some products need to be skipped, while others become a necessity.

She sorted it all out on The Early Show Saturday.

In summary:

SKIN

SKIP:
Cream cleansers
Heavy body and face moisturizers

USE:
Foaming cleansers
Oil-free lotions with SPF
Exfoliants and toners

MAKE-UP

High-coverage foundation
Cream blushes
Dark lipsticks

USE:
Light moisturizers with SPF
Gel or powder blush
Lip gloss with SPF.

HAIR

SKIP:
Styling balm
Hair spray
Flat and curling irons
Hair dryers

USE:
Hydrating shampoo
Leave-in conditioner
Flexible hold hair spray
Styling products with UV protection

SKIN, FACE AND BODY

Ditch:

Cream cleansers and heavy moisturizers, which will feel slimy on your skin and can cause breakouts

Switch To:

Foaming cleansers, lightweight lotions and oil-free facial moisturizers with SPF. Exfoliants and toners for breakout-prone body parts.

Products:
? Biore Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser, $7.49 (at drugstores and mass retailers)
? Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen, $10.99 (at drugstores and mass retailers)
? Clean & Clear Soft Oil-Free Moisturizer SPF 15, $8.49 (at drugstores and mass retailers)
? Completely Bare’s Bikini Bump Blaster, $32 (at completelybare.com)
? Naturopathica Rosemary Lemon Clarifying Plant Milk Mist, $28 (at naturopathica.com)

MAKEUP

Ditch:

High-coverage foundation, which will be obvious in the sunlight; cream blushes, high-pigment lipsticks that will look too heavy.

Switch To:

Tinted moisturizers with SPF, gel or powder blush; blotting powder; lip gloss with SPF.

Products:
? Bobbi Brown SPF 15 Tinted Moisturizer, $40 (at bobbibrown.com)
? Tarte Cheekstains, $28 each (at tartecosmetics.com)
? Chanel Irreelle Blush, $40 each (at chanel.com)
? Mally Cosmetics Colorless Perfecting Powder, $28 (at qvc.com)
? Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15, $14 each (at clinique.com)

HAIR

Ditch:

Anything that goes against your natural hair texture : It’s too hard to fight nature in the humidity! Heat tools (flat irons; curling irons) every day are a no-no. High-lacquer hairspray — you don’t want hair to look too “done” in the summer.

Switch To:

Hydrating shampoo and conditioner that will keep hair from frizzing; leave-in conditioner if your hair tends to fall flat. Flexible hold hair spray. Styling products with UV protection, so color doesn’t fade so fast. Hair elastics are a must for instant heat relief

Products:
? Kim Vo Enrich Moisturizing Shampoo and Nourish Moisturizing Conditioner, $24 each (at barneys.com)
? Nexxus Humectress Luxe Ultimate Moisturizing Leave-In Spray, $10.99. Also contains UV protection. (at drugstores and mass retailers)
? Warren-Tricomi Flexible Hold Hairspray, $20 (at bathandbodyworks.com)
? Goody Color Collection Pony Tail Holders, $2.99 (at drugstores and mass retailers)
